Who we are:
The Energy Management Group (EMG) at the UCLA Anderson School of Management serves to strengthen educational pursuits, facilitate networking opportunities, and enhance recruiting efforts among Anderson students, alumni and energy related organizations. We provide venues for students to learn, connect, and launch careers in the energy industry. We promote career development in all parts of the industry and provide a formal channel for energy recruiting to take place at UCLA Anderson. One of our flagship events is our “Challenges in Energy” case competition.
What we are planning:
EMG is hosting it seventh Annual “Challenges in Energy” case competition on Thursday, February 27th, 2020. The competition is bringing teams from MBA schools all over the country that have strong energy programs.
Southern California Edison is the platinum sponsor. The case prompt typically relates to either future energy challenges, new technology or entrepreneurship in energy.
Schedule of events and rules:
Wednesday, February 12th, 2020
- Case will be released 12:00 PM PST
Sunday, February 16th, 2020
- Completed case materials and presentations shall be submitted electronically to chris.stassis.2020@anderson.ucla.edu and mayank.gupta.2021@anderson.ucla.edu by 9:00 PM PST
- During the above time window, the following restrictions apply:
- Teams may not seek outside assistance from any individuals not registered as part of their team (i.e. professors, other students, etc.).
- Teams may use any internet or print resources they like to gather additional pertinent information to the case but should not rely on financial models or other calculating tools available online. All external data or information used in the final presentation must be clearly cited in the presentation.
- If a team has questions about any of the content in the case documents or spots an error in the materials that may notably affect any analysis, they should e-mail mayank.gupta.2021@anderson.ucla.edu with their questions. The case writers will review the question and respond if the information is critical to case completion, not available in the existing documents, and not intended to be an assumption or point of additional research.
- Any errors pointed out during the case will be corrected and re-distributed to all teams ASAP.
- Presentation materials should contain the team’s chosen name, but should not contain any information identifying the school represented.
Thursday, February 27th, 2020
- Teams must check-in at UCLA Anderson no later than 8:00 AM PST.
- At the time of registration, teams should provide 5 hard copies of their presentation for ease of review for the judges during and after any presentations. Supporting materials need not be provided unless a team feels they are critical and intends to reference specific points during their presentation.
- Teams will be randomly divided into groups and assigned 45-minute time slots at 8:30, 9:20, 10:10 or 11:00. Teams should plan on roughly a 20-25 minute presentation and 10-15 minutes of Q&A from judges after the presentation. All presentations will take place in UCLA Anderson classrooms.
- Teams must not reference their school affiliation during their presentations.
- Teams may not view any other team presentations during the first round.
- The judges will select a winning team from each group to advance to the final round. The final round presentations will be open to any non-finalist groups to attend, and to any finalist groups that have already presented.
- If a team advances to the final round, they will be given a “twist” in the case to incorporate into their presentation. Teams will be allowed to adjust presentation materials but are not required to do so. However, be prepared to reference the twist during discussion about the relevant portion of the case, and potentially during Q&A sessions.
- Each finalist team will be given the “twist” 45 minutes in advance of their presentation time.
- Final round judges will convene after all three presentations and the 3rd, 2nd and 1st place teams will be announced at the cocktail reception to follow the competition.
- Questions about the rules should be sent to mayank.gupta.2021@anderson.ucla.edu
